Zoological reserve

There are more than 200 species looking forward to meeting you!

The Minihollywood Oasys Zoo opened its doors in June 1997. It has more than 800 animals of 200 different species and is located in the heart of the Tabernas desert, including a vegetation with more than 4000 trees.

The Minihollywood Oasys zoological reserve has belonged since its inception to the Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AIZA), which includes the most prominent zoos in Spain and Portugal. Its aim is for zoos to be centres of recovery and environmental education. It is also a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), which represents and unites more than 300 institutions from 35 countries. Its mission is to facilitate cooperation between zoos and the aquarium community in Europe towards the objectives of education, research and conservation, these being the three basic pillars on which the work of Minihollywood Oasys is based.

Education

At Minihollywood Oasys we have developed an educational offer that allows us to be an additional resource for schools and their curricula. All our activities are adapted to the educational level of the students and their general objective is to learn about the environment and the species that inhabit it, as well as to raise awareness and promote the conservation of ecosystems and the individuals that inhabit them. To do this we apply different methodologies, depending on the activity in question, but all with a common denominator: education in values and awareness of the environment.

As we have real film sets in our facilities, these objectives are extended to the field of arts and history, thus offering more educational resources to the centres that visit us.

We offer the possibility of adapting our activities to the contents that are of interest to the centre or to the students. Contact us and we will work side by side to make it happen.

Research

Zoos should be an important source of knowledge and scientific activity, essential in many cases for the survival of biodiversity, the conservation of species (especially those that are threatened and endangered) and natural ecosystems, as many aspects of the biology of wild animals cannot be studied in their natural habitat, especially in those species where the population is in decline and individuals are difficult to find and observe.

With these objectives in mind, the Minihollywood Oasys Research Department carries out its activities with the advice and coordination of the University of Murcia. Consult our research projects here.

Conservation

As a member of EAZA since 2008, at Minihollywood Oasys we base our work on the conservation of endangered species. To this end, we work within the so-called "Breeding Programmes", such as the "European Endangered Species Programmes" (EEP) and the "European Studbooks" (ESB), which help to conserve healthy populations of animals in captivity, ensuring the genetic variability of the animals under our care.

These programmes act to give a future to some of the most vulnerable species on the planet, especially where in situ conservation and educational work is able to actively assist in the protection of natural habitats and promote education to help local populations value their neighbours, the wild animals.

In addition, EAZA members coordinate within "Taxon Advisory Groups" (TAGs) , which specialise in the different species groups, families or classes into which the animal kingdom is divided and are responsible for developing "Regional Collection Plans" by which we assess which species to protect and why to protect those species.
